Ready when you are

You'll read a short passage. We time you, then ask three quick questions — because speed only counts if you understood it.

  • 1 Click start and read the passage naturally
  • 2 Hit "I'm done" the moment you finish
  • 3 Answer 3 questions for your real score

Every time you read a line, your eyes do not glide smoothly across it. They move in short, sharp jumps called saccades, pausing four or five times to grab a small cluster of words before leaping ahead. The pauses, not the jumps, are where reading actually happens — your brain stitching the snapshots into meaning faster than you notice.

The average adult reads somewhere between two hundred and two hundred and fifty words per minute. Skilled readers push past three hundred while still following the argument, and trained speed readers can clear five hundred. But raw pace is only half the story. A reader who races through a page and remembers nothing has not really read it at all, which is why comprehension is measured alongside speed.

The encouraging part is that reading speed is a trainable skill. Widening the span of words your eyes take in per pause, resisting the habit of silently sounding out each word, and simply reading more all nudge the number upward. Like any sport, it rewards practice, measurement, and a little friendly competition.

Read at your natural pace — no skimming.

Why it matters

Speed means nothing without understanding.

  • Measure what's real

Anyone can skim. Our score combines your reading speed with a comprehension check, so it reflects reading you'd actually remember.

  • Improve with feedback

Track your WPM over time, spot your progress, and turn a vague "I read a lot" into a number you can grow.

  • Great for every age

Purpose-built categories for kids, teens, and adults — fair matchups and age-appropriate books.

How your score works
Speed × Comprehension

Read fast and understand well to top the table. Blitz through without absorbing it and the score won't reward you — exactly like real reading.

How we compare

Most speed-reading apps drill you alone. Test My Reading Speed is a competition.

The popular apps flash words at you or drag a highlighter across your own text — solo practice, no stakes, and rarely any check on whether you understood it. Here's how we compare.
